HERS Council News
We would like to welcome, to the Friday Report faxletter, and congratulate
the National members of the Home Energy Rating Systems Council .
To those of you that are new to the list, the Friday Report is dedicated
to the primary issues of Energy Efficient Mortgages, Energy Rating Systems
and Indoor Air Quality with a spoonful of Energy Conservation subjects
and just a dash of "off the wall".
Our compliments regard the new Energy Star and E-Seal Energy Efficient
Mortgages that are regarded as the most "...user friendly, as well
as technically proficient, lending products for new construction ever created
during the 27 years since EEMs were invented". According to HERS Chair
Christine Lowrie. Ms. Lowrie also predicts that new EEMs will be in place
for existing construction shortly after the New Year.

NSP Offers Solar Electricity To Minn. Homeowners
From Air Conditioning Heating & Refrigeration News. Minneapolis
-- Northern States Power Co. (NSP) is offering residential customers a chance
to generate emission-free solar electricity in their homes.
The company's EnergyWise(R) Solar Advantage Program makes environmentally
friendly solar electricity more affordable for interested customers, according
to the utility.
Since April, six homes have had solar panels installed, with 11 more planned.
The rooftop solar panels absorb sunlight and convert it to electricity.
Excess electricity is automatically sold to the company at the customer's
rate.
NSP pays for and installs the systems with the help of U.S. Department
of Energy and the Utility Photovoltaic Group. Typically, systems cost from
$15,000 to $20,000 each.
Program participants share the cost of the solar-power system by paying
an additional $50 on each month's electric bill for five years. In return,
the customer uses all of the energy generated from the solar panels free
of charge, adding up to $14 worth of free electricity each month.
These solar-powered systems do not generate enough electricity to cover
the average homes' entire need for electricity, but they do help the environment,
the company says.
The program makes the emission-free power more affordable for customers
whose homes are suited to the technology. Requirements are an undisturbed
roof area facing south and measuring at least 320 sq ft; no obstructions
that block the sun during the day; and no nearby trees that shade the roof.
