A Canary's Tale

_________________

People get sick from exposure to toxic chemicals in the home, in the workplace, indoors, and outdoors. They sometimes suffer silently while the joy of life is diminished, while their careers are ended, and the body mechanisms become dysfunctional. And they do not realize there is a link between chemical exposure and disease. Many of these illnesses are

preventable. Education is the key to prevention.

The author, a trial lawyer who was poisoned in his own home by exposure to a so called "safe pesticide," takes the reader on

an eight-year Odyssey of experience, study and research about the effect the environment has upon the people on this planet.

He produces clear and convincing evidence that there is a link between what is called "low level" exposure to thousands of

chemicals, indoors and outdoors, and adverse health effects, between chemical exposure and disease, including cancer, asthma, emphysema and other respiratory diseases, and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). MCS is controversial and the American Medical Association does not recognize it as a disease. A Canary's Tale was written to help establish recognition of MCS as a valid disease, syndrome, or illness.

Just how large a problem exists is not known at this time. But everyone is at risk. No one is safe. Not the author. Not the

reader. Not anyone. The patient with MCS is like the canary in the coal mine. The canary is warning humanity that the

environment is polluted and as a sentinel sound the Call for Action.

The enemies are real - industry has failed to protect the public. The Congress has rallied to protect the polluters who are the

big campaign contributors, the Environmental Presidents have failed to use the influence of their bully pulpit to educate the

public, and the public has failed to protect itself.

To read A Canary's Tale is to recognize the danger, especially to our children and future generations, and do something about it before it is too late. No cause is more important.

Energy Star

Buildings program

_________________

The EPA's new Energy Star Buildings program is a voluntary energy efficiency program for U.S. commercial buildings.

Expanding on the successful Green Lights program, this initiative focuses on profitable investment opportunities available inmost buildings, using proven technologies. A central component of the program is a step-by-step implementation strategy

that takes advantage of system interactions, enabling building owners to achieve additional energy savings while lowering

capital expenditures.

The five-stage Energy Star Buildings upgrade strategy is as follows:

Stage One: Green Lights program

Install energy-efficient lighting

Stage Two: Building tune-up Check and adjust building systemsDevelop and implement an ongoing preventative maintenance plan

Stage Three: Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning load reductions. Install window films, reflective roof coverings, and more effective roof insulation. Buy energy-efficient computers, monitors, and printers that have the EPA Energy Star logo

Stage Four: Improved fans and air-handling systems. Upgrade variable-air-volume (VAV) systems with variable-speed drives (VSDs)Upgrade constant-air-volume systems with VAV systems

Replace existing motors with smaller, high-efficiency motors

Stage Five: Improved heating and cooling plant. Replace or upgrade chillers. Plan for 1995 phaseout of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

Retrofit water pumps and compressors with VSDs.Replace electric resistance heating where possible.
