We're Back

_________________

I hope you missed us last week and for some of you, the week before. Last week we were on a business/pleasure trip and the week before we suffered a bit of a technical snaffu.

Regarding the snaffu; I take solice in the fact that even some of the people who have written those 2" thick books about computer bla bla bla admit that they can't get their computer/fax/modem/software configurations to do what they want them to do without a certain amount of unpleasantness.

I keep 3 computers faxing pretty much all day Friday and sometimes I lose the battle. What a life! Remember when - way back - we used to say things like, "someday that's all people will do - is push buttons"? Well for many of us that time has come - the buttons on our keyboards - so are we happy? Heck no! We scream and cuss at our buttons and complain of sore wrists!

As long as I've gone this far into nonsense I'll give you one more nonsensical tip; When it comes to this tech stuff there is truly no such thing as a "dumb question". And even if you do have a dumb question - just keep asking it untill you get a satisfying answer.

The main reason why you seem to get more confused is that most of the people you query with the "dumb question" don't know the answer either, but they won't admit it so they just say something confusing. The result seems to be an everwidening "circle of confusion" that makes an expert of everybody.

If you actually think your "keeping up" it's probably a pretty good indication that your "way behind". Peace.

The big phone Co., NYNEX announced that the company has received the annual Commercial Recycling Award for developing and operating an outstanding recycling and waste reduction program. At a ceremony held yesterday, MassRecycle presented NYNEX with the award for significant environmental achievement in 1996, including:

- Recycling 98 percent of the 41 million pounds of cable, wire and telecommunications equipment that it removed from its operations

- Reducing the margins of its white pages directories, implementing surname suppression (listing common last names only once), and reducing the weight of the white pages, resulting in saving 2,000 tons of paper annually

 - Producing directories that contain 25 percent recycled content and establishing a goal of 40 percent by 1998

- Establishing a process to obtain and use bill return envelopes (127 million a year) that contain 100 percent post-consumer fiber, 50 percent of which is from recycled telephone directories

- Saving 1,000 tons of paper by printing bills on both sides of the paper

- Providing recycling information pages in each phone book that is tailored to a communitys recycling program.

"NYNEX is proud of our demonstrated commitment to environmental protection and recycling," said Ken Teal, NYNEX Director of Environmental Issues,

Paper and Recycling. "We continue to work hard to identify and take advantage of unique opportunities where recycling, or environmental protection, also result in cost savings.

It's a win-win for NYNEX and the environment." A panel of independent judges representing Massachusetts businesses selected the winners based on their dedication to reducing waste, recycling, and purchasing recycled products. All businesses in Massachusetts were eligible to receive this recognition.
