What do you consider to be the
tallest tale (allright lie) you've heard from people trying to sell products
or services that are suppose to conserve energy. --Richard C. Lambert
I remember some "Energy-saving" specially modified thermostat
back in the 70's that was supposed to dramatically reduce heating bills....
It consisted of a small light bulb inside that would turn on when calling
for heat, thus heating up the thermostat itself and shutting the heat off
before the room had reached the set temp. People would have had better luck
with a suggestion of lowering the thermostat setting a couple of degrees..
they would not have been quite as cold.--Rob Luke.
Hmm. Hard to pick :-) The one about the white paint with the remarkable
R-value that keeps your house warm in the winter? --Nick Pine
Hmmm...Good one!! I woulda picked the white paint one, but since it's been
offered, gosh..the list is long ;), I guess Eagel Shield Radiant Barrier
..mostly cuz so many of their reps made such outragous claims..and charged
a HUGE markup..not to mention that the stuff not only lowered your utlity
bills, you saved so much, I think the utility sent you money every month...
Of course, there's also the present day one...about those (can't say the
name here :( ), ceiling-to-roof vent caps that are so "smart"
they're supposed to save you energy by cooling your house by dumping house
air in the attic <g>. Then there's the one......... root@newsbf02.news.aol.com
If you'll take a broad view of conserving, to include claims of efficiency,
there's the Tale of Two Words: heat pumps.-- Gregory Resch
How about that there is an energy crisis? --Kirby Palm
Get positive - there are many well proven NEW developments. I could tell
you about the latest (proven) product in the UK but I guess you know it
all. You do realise that without the first telephone salesman you wouldn't
be using the net. -- Andrew Bowley
A particular kind of electric room heater used to be advertised as energy-efficient,
or energy-saving, or some such misleading statement, because after you turned
off the electric power, the heating element stayed hot, and thus continued
to give out heat, for a long time. Some people sure are gullible! "Energy
conservation? Oh, no, not any more! We found a way around that!!" --Dick
Alvarez
Many of us are serious about what we do and wish to keep scientifically
and performance proven products available without having them smeared by
the advertising and marketing wizzes who think first of a quick buck long
before they actually wonder (well, assuming they ever DO wonder) if the
thing ever works. I must agree. Energy saving schemes that pretend they
can save vast fortunes usually end up being removed years later at additional
cost. As an engineer I have dealt with many such ideas pitched at my clients
who in their ignorance become very enthusiastic. This has resulted in my
wasting time and energy in proving that the product is not financially viable.
I therefore welcome with interest this thread and find the comments most
interesting and amusing. But we must be cautious save we deter any would
be genuine claims of energy conservation, we don't have that much left!
